14.5" x 14.5" x 6" In the 1830's, the Mississippi Choctaw tribe was forced by the U.S. government to relocate to Oklahoma.
Of the 12,000 Choctaws who made the journey, 2,500 would die along the way. President Andrew Jackson called this policy "Removal." The Choctaw Chief, Nitikechi called it "a trail of tears. "Carrying the ill and the infirm along that tragic route was the loyal and indefatigable Choctaw Indian Pony. Like the Choctaw people, he would reach Oklahoma and survive. Today, however, he is listed as nearly extinct.
In an effort to help fund preservation of these zoological and historical treasures, James Lockhart has created a remarkable sculpture that is a tribute to the unbroken spirit of the Choctaw Nation and their horses.
All proceeds go directly to the Choctaw Indian Pony Conservation Program.
